STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT Wiki
STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is a full remake of 2009's legendary visual novel STEINS;GATE, developed by MAGES. and published by Spike Chunsoft. Announced during the STEINS;GATE 15th anniversary ONE WORLD event, it was originally planned for a 2025 release before being delayed to 2026. The rollout is genuinely staggered: PC and Xbox Series X|S launch in Japan on August 20, 2026, while PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 follow in Japan on October 29, 2026 -- the same October 29 date also marks the game's full Western (North America and Europe) release across all platforms.
A Genuine, Candid Reason for the Remake
Directors Hayashi and Matsubara have been direct about why this remake exists: they believe the original STEINS;GATE, now over 15 years old, feels too dated for newcomers approaching the series today. That said, this hasn't landed as uncontroversial -- some longtime fans have publicly questioned the point of remaking a story that's still readily playable in its original form on modern platforms, a genuine, ongoing point of community skepticism worth knowing about honestly.
The Story
You play Rintaro Okabe, a university student who runs a small, quirky invention club in Akihabara called the Future Gadget Laboratory, under the self-styled alias "Hououin Kyouma." When his group's latest invention turns out to send emails to the past, a chaotic global conspiracy begins to unfold. The base scenario is drawn from STEINS;GATE ELITE specifically, refined for better pacing and readability, with an entirely new worldline and ending scenario added beyond what any prior version of the story has shown.
A Genuine Visual and Audio Overhaul
Every character, background, and event still image has been redrawn from scratch -- event stills have roughly doubled in number compared to the original, and background visuals have increased by about 20%. Character designer huke (the original series artist) returns to redesign outfits and accessories with a more contemporary flair, and Akihabara itself has been reconstructed from extensive real-world reference material as it appeared in 2010. All in-game voices have been re-recorded, and all background music has been remade by returning composer Takeshi Abo.
Editions
Multiple physical editions are planned for the Japanese release, including Limited and Ultra-Limited editions featuring soundtrack collections, an art book, live concert footage, and exclusive illustrations by huke.
