Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn

Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn — Overview

Grim Dawn is a long-running isometric Action RPG from Crate Entertainment, first released in 2016 and still actively developed a decade later. Fangs of Asterkarn, released July 23, 2026, is the game's third and final expansion -- and by every account its largest ever. Alongside the paid expansion, all players received the free v1.3.0 update, a major quality-of-life overhaul including a stash overhaul, full UI rework, WASD movement controls, HDR lighting, detailed item tooltips, and general rebalancing.

The Scale of This Expansion

Fangs of Asterkarn adds an all-new region spanning over 6 square kilometers -- 190% the size of the previous Ashes of Malmouth expansion and 250% the size of Forgotten Gods. Crate Entertainment has described it as "not quite Grim Dawn 2, but very much Grim Dawn 1.5," citing more custom unique art, more animations, and a live-orchestra-recorded soundtrack as part of the studio's stated goal to send the game off with a genuine roar rather than a quiet finish.

The Berserker: A Genuinely New Kind of Mastery

The headline new feature is the Berserker, Grim Dawn's 10th mastery and its first shapeshifting hybrid class -- bringing the total number of possible dual-mastery combinations to 45. Rather than locking into one combat style, Berserkers fight as dual-wielding warriors channeling Cold, Bleeding, and Piercing damage through a stacking mechanic called Onslaught, with the option to shapeshift mid-battle into a bloodthirsty Werewolf or a spellcasting Wereraven.

Story: The Kurn of Asterkarn

The expansion sends players into Asterkarn, the western territories of Cairn, to parlay with the Kurn tribes -- a new chapter of the story focused on the Kurn's nomadic history and a darker side of their past. Three factions let you rekindle old alliances as you navigate that history and learn ancient secrets from an unusual new ally.

A True Endgame Overhaul: Ascendant Mode

Ascendant Mode turns the entire campaign world -- not just new content -- into an endgame proving ground layered on top of Ultimate difficulty, designed to test even the most refined existing builds. It's paired with a new item Ascension system (upgrading item potency) and Awakened Epic recipes, giving veteran players a genuine reason to revisit old zones rather than just the new region.

Prerequisites

Fangs of Asterkarn requires both prior expansions -- Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods -- to be installed, and a character that has reached Fort Ikon in the base campaign before the new content becomes accessible.
