GRAIN ROT — Overview
GRAIN ROT is a horror co-op extraction builder from Beck & Branch Games, a two-person Swedish studio, published by Neem Interactive. It launches August 7, 2026 on PC via Steam, arriving with real momentum: over 350,000 demo downloads, 250,000+ Steam wishlists, and a Top 15 placement among most-played demos at Steam Next Fest in June 2026 -- a striking result for a two-person team with no prior major release.
The Core Hook: Possession, Not Permadeath
You don't play as a human character -- you're a Living Spark inhabiting fragile wooden vessels that splinter, collapse, and catch fire. When your vessel breaks, you don't die -- your Spark escapes the wreckage and lingers in the run, able to guide teammates and search for a new vessel to possess, each with a different set of abilities. Fail to find one before the Spark fades, and the run ends for real. The developers have called this a genre-first death mechanic, and it's the single biggest thing distinguishing GRAIN ROT from similar co-op horror titles.
The Loop
Ride a cursed elevator down into procedurally shifting underground ruins (the Deep Layers), smash furniture for resources, feed scrap into the Grinder for gold, and fight or flee the Corrupted -- maddened vessels that react unpredictably to sound and movement. The deeper you go, the worse the Rot gets: bodies warp, voices distort, and encounter density rises. Knowing when to call a run and ride the elevator back up matters as much as what you grab on the way.
Everything Is Physics, Including Your Friends
GRAIN ROT leans hard into physics-driven chaos as a feature, not a bug -- you can dropkick enemies, "accidentally" launch a teammate's Spark out of their vessel, or block someone in a monster-filled corridor. If your entire crew breaks during a run, all the loot you were carrying is lost for good, adding real weight to the chaos.
Progression: The Sanctuary Outpost
Everything hauled back from a successful run feeds the persistent Sanctuary Outpost hub -- unlocking interactive furniture, stat upgrades, rescued survivors, and new constructs (vessels) for future runs. The full 1.0 release adds a second Outpost floor, additional NPC machines for enchanting and repairing items, 2 new biomes with new ambient music, new enemies, elite encounters, and a boss encounter -- substantially more than the public demo offered.
An Honest Note on AI Voiceover
The developers have directly disclosed using AI-generated voiceover for a few in-game characters, alongside AI-assisted tools in parts of development -- while stating creative vision, gameplay, and final asset decisions remain their own. This is worth knowing going in, since it's an active point of discussion in the game's own community.
