Echoes of Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad FAQ

Do I play as Kirito?

No -- for the first time in a mainline Sword Art Online game, you play as your own fully customizable created character. Kirito and Asuna are referenced through the story's framing and appear in the character creator, but the main party is built around your protagonist, the original character Iori, and other new companions.

Why can't I use magic or a bow?

By design -- Aincrad is depicted as being under an ancient spell that prevents humans from wielding magic, and causes arrows to veer off course. Combat is deliberately restricted to melee weapons and shields as a result.

How many floors does the game cover?

Aincrad spans 100 floors in total lore, but the base game at launch covers the Prologue plus the first two complete floors. An Expansion DLC adding a side story and new companions is planned for October-December 2026.

Is the game well-reviewed?

Reception has been genuinely mixed rather than uniformly positive -- as of this writing, 53% of over 2,091 Steam reviews are positive. It's worth knowing this going in, even though the game had a strong commercial launch (peaking at over 19,900 concurrent Steam players, the second-highest peak of any Sword Art Online game on Steam).

What editions are available?

A base edition, a Deluxe edition (adds access to the Expansion DLC), and an "Unanswered//butterfly" special edition (adds a Special Movie, Digital Artbook, Digital Soundtrack, and Armor Pack). All editions that pre-order receive the Proto-Elucidator Series weapon pack.

Is Steam Deck supported?

No -- Steam Deck compatibility is officially listed as unavailable for the initial launch window.

Can I transfer my demo save to the full game?

Yes -- a "Carry Over" feature lets demo save data transfer into the full version once it's updated to the launch-day patch, preserving your avatar, weapon proficiency, and currency.
