Echoes of Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad — Overview

Echoes of Aincrad is an official Sword Art Online action RPG built on Unreal Engine 5, developed by Game Studio Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Based on Reki Kawahara's light novels, it launched July 9-10, 2026 (staggered by region and platform) on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and quickly became the second most successful Sword Art Online game ever on Steam by concurrent players, behind only Fatal Bullet.

A Custom Protagonist in a Familiar World

For the first time in a mainline Sword Art Online game, you play as your own creation rather than a fixed character. As one of 10,000 players trapped inside the floating death-game castle of Aincrad, your fully customizable hero (body type, face, hair, eyes, skin tone, and voice) must survive and climb toward Floor 100 to escape. An original character, Iori, serves as your primary AI companion and co-lead throughout the story, while canon series characters Argo, Kirito, and Asuna appear as returning figures -- Argo in her full game debut as a recruitable party member, and Kirito and Asuna referenced through the framing and character creator.

Combat: No Magic, No Bows -- By Design

Combat is real-time and melee-focused: light and heavy attacks, parrying, and dodging (jump or roll), all governed by a stamina system. Magic and ranged weapons like bows are deliberately unavailable -- Aincrad itself is under an ancient spell that prevents humans from wielding magic and causes arrows to veer off course, making close-range weapon-and-shield combat the only viable path.

The Partner System

Before each quest, you choose 1 to 3 AI partner characters to fight alongside you, swapping their weapons and skills anytime from your room at any town's Inn. You can direct how a partner supports you -- pulling enemy aggro, or focusing fire on a single target -- making party composition a real tactical layer on top of your own build.

Launch Scope and Reception

At launch, the game covers the Prologue plus the complete first two floors of the 100-floor castle, with an Expansion DLC (a side story and new companions) planned for October-December 2026. Reception has been genuinely mixed rather than uniformly positive -- 53% of over 2,091 Steam reviews are positive, a real split worth knowing about rather than glossing over given the game's strong commercial opening.
