Capy Castaway is a cozy, narrative-driven exploration adventure from Toronto-based indie studio Kitten Cup Studio (previously behind 2023's Pekoe, an award-winning tea-making simulator), published by Big Blue Sky Games. It launches August 6, 2026 on PC and Mac via Steam, priced at $17.99 (a 10% launch discount off its regular $19.99).
A Genuinely Real-Life Inspiration
The game is directly inspired by a real 2016 event: the escape of two capybaras from Toronto's High Park Zoo, a story that captured local and international attention at the time. Kitten Cup Studio has built an entire whimsical narrative around that real moment of animal mischief.
The Story
After a devastating flood sweeps several zoo animals far from home, a young, silent, curious capybara pup named Capy washes ashore on the mysterious Castaway Island. There, Capy meets Corvi, a resourceful, talkative fledgling crow ("90% beak, 10% shriek," as the developers put it) who effectively acts as Capy's voice throughout the adventure. Together, they set out to find their way home -- but the flood has also disrupted the delicate balance between the island's natural and spiritual worlds, hinting at real narrative depth beneath the game's cozy surface. A mysterious character named Dragon is also confirmed, revealed in the launch trailer.
Two Characters, Two Very Different Ability Sets
Capy explores by sniffing out secrets, digging, swimming, pushing objects, and interacting with curious items -- and can turn found objects into wearable hats for customization. Corvi can fly, retrieve distant objects, and even carry Capy across gaps and short distances. The two abilities are designed to complement each other directly, whether you're playing solo and switching between both characters or splitting them between two players in co-op.

Local co-op and Steam Remote Play Together are both confirmed, and the game is explicitly designed to be low-stress and welcoming -- for longtime adventure-game players and for partners, families, or kids trying the genre for the first time alike.
Branching Story, Multiple Endings
The choices you make shape your relationships with the island's residents, the island itself, and which of the game's multiple endings you ultimately reach -- giving genuine narrative weight to how you choose to help (or not help) the castaways you encounter.
A Notable Soundtrack Credit
The original score is composed by Mark Sparling, best known for his work on the acclaimed A Short Hike -- a real, notable pedigree for a cozy exploration game's music, and the soundtrack will be purchasable separately at launch.
