Blood Dungeon

Blood Dungeon Wiki

Blood Dungeon is a feverish bullet-heaven platformer and action roguelike from Messhof -- the Venice, California studio behind the award-winning Nidhogg (2014), Flywrench, Nidhogg II, and Wheel World -- self-published and set for release August 25, 2026 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. A free demo has been available since June 2026, with save data confirmed to transfer into the full game.

The Premise

Run, jump, and climb to avoid hordes of monsters -- duck and weave between enemies, scramble up ladders, across grates, and over chains, with walls, ceilings, and even watery depths all yours to master. Rather than standing and shooting, Blood Dungeon builds its entire combat loop around genuine platforming traversal, kiting monsters through gorgeous, gritty pixel art dungeons while harvesting Blood to raise your level and upgrade your build.

Over 100 Enemies, 9 Characters, 6 Arenas

The dungeons hold more than 100 confirmed enemy types -- bats, centaurs, and exploding eyeballs among them -- each with genuinely distinct movement patterns: some fly through walls, others walk, stick, or bounce across surfaces, and learning their behavior is confirmed as key to survival. 9 unlockable playable characters (each with their own weapon and movement perk) headline the roster, with confirmed named examples including Leggy (who spins climbable webs), Bug (who takes flight), and Skinja (built for speed). 6 unique survival arenas, over 100 quests, and over 100 unlockable weapons and upgrades round out the confirmed content.

The Dogmancer and the Bone Shop

Surviving a run lets you take your earned bones to the Bone Shop, where the Dogmancer awaits -- paying the bone toll unlocks permanent upgrades that carry forward and make future runs genuinely stronger, alongside quests that unlock further upgrades, arenas, and skins.

A Genuinely Personal Origin Story

Messhof co-founder Mark Essen has spoken directly and warmly about how the game began: a small personal Game Maker sketch he'd tinker with to unwind, developed casually over several years with a little $50 drawing tablet, often animating in the car while waiting around for something else. "The lack of pressure and small windows of time that defined 90% of the development kept it fun and drove a lot of the design decisions," he explained -- a genuinely different origin story than a typical planned studio project.

Sound and Reception

A dynamic "dungeon dnb" soundtrack comes from composer Thomas Hooey. Ahead of the full release, the free demo has drawn a Very Positive reception (95% of 68+ reviews), and hands-on preview coverage from Shacknews specifically praised the detailed end-of-run stats screen and called it a genuinely natural fit for Steam Deck.
