Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is Square Enix's remastered compilation of 2001's Final Fantasy X and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2, originally released on PS3 in 2013 and PS4/PC/Vita/Xbox One in 2014. It arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 digitally on July 23, 2026, timed close to Final Fantasy X's own 25th anniversary, with a Japan-only physical Game-Key Card release following on August 27, 2026.

The Story

Final Fantasy X follows Tidus, a star blitzball player pulled into the world of Spira, whose fate becomes entwined with Yuna, a summoner on a pilgrimage to defeat the colossal menace known as Sin. Final Fantasy X-2 picks up two years later, with Yuna -- now joined by companions Rikku and Paine -- becoming a Sphere Hunter investigating a mysterious image that suggests someone she thought lost may still be alive. Together, the two games offer over 100 combined hours of content.

International Version Content Included

This compilation carries over content from the International versions of both games that wasn't in the original Western PS2 releases, including exclusive boss battles, additional story content, and two of the series' most notoriously difficult optional superboss encounters: the Dark Aeons and Penance.

New, Console-First Features on Switch 2

The Switch 2 release introduces a High-Speed Mode and a toggle to disable random encounters entirely -- both previously available only on the PC version of this remaster, now appearing on console for the first time. High-Speed Mode lets players adjust game speed, character stat enhancements, and encounter rate directly, catering to both players who want to move quickly through the story and those who prefer a slower, more traditional pace.

A Real, Important Save Data Limitation

Save data from the original Nintendo Switch version of this remaster cannot be transferred to the Switch 2 version -- they're listed as entirely separate products on the eShop. If you've already invested significant hours into a Switch 1 playthrough, that progress does not carry over, and no upgrade path between the two versions has been announced.

Region-Specific Release Details

The Western release is confirmed as digital-only, priced at $49.99, with no physical Western edition announced. Japan receives a physical release on August 27, 2026, but as a Game-Key Card -- meaning the cartridge itself contains no actual game data and instead unlocks a digital download.
