Ascend to ZERO

Ascend to ZERO — Overview

Ascend to ZERO is a time-bending action roguelike from Flyway Games, a South Korean studio founded in 2023 and owned by Krafton, who also publishes the game. It launched July 13, 2026 on Steam and Xbox (Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming), with day-one Xbox Game Pass availability via Xbox Play Anywhere.

The Core Hook: Time Is Your Health Bar

You play humanity's last survivor in the year 2225, sent through a Time Machine to fight machine invaders on a post-human, machine-ravaged Earth. Every run starts with roughly 30 seconds -- and that timer isn't a background clock, it's your literal life total. Taking damage shortens your remaining time; defeating enemies and choosing upgrades earns more seconds back. This inverts the usual bullet-heaven formula: rather than surviving until a fixed timer runs out (as in something like Vampire Survivors), you have to actively earn the right to keep playing.

Time Freeze and Resume

Your signature ability, Time Freeze, pauses enemies, projectiles, and the countdown itself while you keep moving freely -- letting you reposition, grab experience, and queue up devastating attacks. Releasing the freeze (Resume) unleashes your chosen Avatar's Special all at once, turning a moment of stillness into a burst of concentrated offense.

Six Playable Avatars

Six confirmed Avatars are playable at launch -- Chrono Child, Blossom Blade, Golden Gunslinger, Windborne Spearmaster, Scarlet Pirate, and Frost Moon Hacker -- each with a distinct growth profile, weapon style, and chip synergies. Switching between them isn't purely cosmetic; Blossom Blade leans into close-range melee bursts, while Golden Gunslinger favors ranged auto-aim play that repeatedly topped community leaderboards during playtests.

Critical Reception

Reviews have been strongly positive: Checkpoint Gaming gave it 9/10, calling the timer mechanic "its greatest strength" rather than a frustrating restriction, while Gameliner scored it 4/5. As of this writing, Steam sits at Very Positive with 82% of over 775 reviews positive.

A Genuinely Notable Casting Choice

Acclaimed Japanese voice actress Akari Kito joined the cast partway through development, voicing Chrono Child and Frost Moon Hacker directly -- plus four additional characters representing alternate-future versions of the same protagonist, each raised in a different timeline. It's an unusually ambitious use of a single voice actress across multiple, narratively distinct versions of one character.
