Which Avatar to Start With in Ascend to ZERO
This isn't a repeat of the Overview page -- it's a closer look at how the 6 Avatars actually differ and how Time Freeze shapes every fight, based on official materials and community build data since the July 13 launch.
Understanding Time Freeze First
Time Freeze isn't a panic button -- it's a setup tool. Pausing enemies, projectiles, and the countdown while you keep moving lets you reposition into a strong spot and gather nearby experience before Resuming into your Avatar's Special. Players who only use it defensively are leaving real damage on the table compared to those who treat it as a repositioning window.
Picking Your First Avatar
- Golden Gunslinger -- ranged, auto-aim fire that lets you focus on dash routes and freeze timing rather than precision aiming. Repeatedly topped community leaderboards during playtests, and generally the more forgiving pick for new players.
- Blossom Blade -- a glass-cannon melee swordsman built around close-range slicing. Her Close Combat Crush skill chip was confirmed as a top-used pick in demo data, but she demands tighter positioning around Time Freeze windows than ranged play.
- Chrono Child, Windborne Spearmaster, Scarlet Pirate, Frost Moon Hacker -- the remaining four launch Avatars, each with distinct weapon styles and chip synergies worth experimenting with once you're comfortable with the core loop.
Why Switching Avatars Isn't Just Cosmetic
Since each Avatar pairs with different Tech Chip synergies and playstyles, treating Avatar choice as a real strategic decision -- not just a skin swap -- pays off once you start building toward specific boss encounters like Terrae Motus.
Timer Management Applies to Every Avatar
Regardless of which Avatar you pick, remember the timer is your actual health total -- prioritizing timer-extending rewards over purely cosmetic upgrades matters more early on than optimizing for a specific damage build.
