Wild Blue Skies Wiki
Wild Blue Skies is an on-rails arcade shooter from Chuhai Labs, a Kyoto-based studio founded in 2020 by Giles Goddard as a brand of VITEI Backroom, published by Balor Games. It launches August 13, 2026 on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S -- no Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 version has been announced, which some fans have found notable given the genre.
A Genuinely Legendary Pedigree
Giles Goddard is a real, celebrated figure in game development history -- he programmed Mario's face model in Super Mario 64, worked on the original 1993 Star Fox, and contributed to 1080° Snowboarding and Steel Diver during his time as one of Nintendo's first Western employees. Wild Blue Skies has been explicitly framed, including by Chuhai Labs itself, as a tribute to that legacy and to the golden age of 90s on-rails shooters more broadly.
The Premise
You pilot Bowie Stray, leading a squad called the Blue Bombers -- four named pilots in total: Bowie, Thorne, Chuck, and Roe, each bringing distinct personality and voice work to every mission -- against the forces of Grimclaw across oceans, desert ridges, perilous caves, and frozen tundra. Missions combine fast-paced dogfights, cinematic set pieces, and dedicated boss encounters designed to test both reflexes and precision.
Modernized Classic Controls
The game keeps the on-rails genre's core arcade rhythm while adding real quality-of-life refinements -- confirmed player testing found that a full-auto fire option separates the main laser fire input from the lock-on charge shot input, letting you hold down fire continuously while still landing charge shots, a genuine improvement over how some classic on-rails shooters handled this.
A Real, Honest Mixed Reception So Far
Community reaction to the demo has been genuinely divided, and it's worth knowing that going in. Some players have called it "legit good" and praised the modernized controls specifically; others have been sharply critical, with some directly comparing Goddard's work unfavorably to his own Star Fox legacy, calling this project derivative, and criticizing the demo's gameplay and voice acting. This isn't unanimous acclaim, and reasonable people disagree about how well it lives up to its inspirations.
