The Sinking City 2

The Sinking City 2 Wiki

The Sinking City 2 is a Lovecraftian survival horror game from Frogwares, self-published and built on Unreal Engine 5.8. It launches August 18, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, following development that began in January 2023. Frogwares is a 90+ person studio with the majority of its team based in Ukraine, and the company has been direct that russia's invasion caused constant uncertainty and shifting timelines throughout the project's development.

A Genuine Genre Shift

Where 2019's The Sinking City was an open-world detective game, this sequel moves squarely into survival horror. Resource management is now central -- ammunition and medicine are deliberately scarce, inventory space is limited, and direct encounters with new threats are genuinely dangerous. Detective mechanics from the original game haven't disappeared, but they've been repositioned as optional: examining clues and solving puzzles unlocks hidden caches or unique equipment, without being required to progress the main story.

The Story

You play Calvin Rafferty, an occult adventurer whose past actions carry serious consequences, forced to enter the fictional Massachusetts city of Arkham after a supernatural flood devastates it. After a dreaming ritual goes catastrophically wrong, Calvin's girlfriend Faye becomes trapped in a mysterious sleep -- to save her, he must travel through the drowned, monster-infested city and confront the cosmic horrors now roaming its streets.

Confirmed Threats

Arkham's flooded ruins are home to classic Lovecraft mythos creatures -- Deep Ones, Mi-Go, and occult zealots among them -- alongside a new, game-specific threat: the Slither, otherworldly creatures that possess and reanimate the dead. Rock Paper Shotgun's preview was direct in its praise, saying the game might finally deliver "a Cthulhu survival horror game to rival Resident Evil and Silent Hill."

Visual Upgrade

The move to Unreal Engine 5.8 -- notably early adoption of this specific engine version, drawing real community curiosity about performance given how few major releases have used it yet -- brings Lumen global illumination, Nanite geometry, and MetaHuman-powered character models. Arkham's monumental American architecture is rendered with real texture and decay, using physically based rendering for believably wet, rotting surfaces throughout the flooded city.

Editions

Standard Edition includes the base game and a Chthonic Arsenal (three unique weapon types). The Exclusive Edition adds an Arkham Expedition Set (additional clothing and crafting items). The Premium Edition adds the Holloway Manor side mission and 24-hour early access ahead of the August 18 release.

A Note on Content

The game's own content tags confirm gore, violence, and sexual content -- worth knowing given the game's psychological horror and investigation themes, alongside its core survival-horror combat.
