The Comeback King

The Comeback King Wiki

The Comeback King is a light-hearted retro boxing management game set in the UK during the 1980s, from solo developer Ian Williams, self-published under his own studio Subjunctive Software, on PC and Linux.

A Genuine 40-Year Personal Story

This is a slightly delayed reimagining -- and genuine sequel -- to Boxing Manager, a game Ian Williams personally wrote himself in the mid-1980s for the ZX Spectrum 48K. The original ROM for the Willysoft UK release will be bundled directly with the PC download, playable via emulator, letting players experience both the 1980s original and its modern successor side by side.

The Premise

You take control of a faded fighter at the bottom of the rankings -- older, slower, and already carrying damage -- and try to guide him back to relevance before his body or mind gives out. Choose opponents carefully: tougher fights mean bigger rewards, but greater risk. Balance strength, stamina, skill, and long-term cognitive health, since pushing too hard can leave permanent damage that follows your fighter for the rest of his career.

Managing Every Side of the Business

Beyond the ring, you'll deal with promoters offering tempting but dangerous match-ups, manage finances and prize money, purchase gym upgrades, and hire trainers to improve recovery and performance. During fights, you watch bouts unfold and intervene with limited coaching commands, patching your fighter up between rounds -- since momentum can turn in seconds, every decision carries real weight. The sequel retains many features of the original 1980s game while adding more interaction during matches, additional gyms, a proper Shop, more opponent choice, and a refined Popularity system.

Period Atmosphere, Down to the Playlist

Retro pixel art and UI, period-accurate UK flavor, entrance music choices, posters, and atmosphere all inspired directly by the era -- the developer has even put together a dedicated Spotify playlist to accompany the game.
