The Carcass

The Carcass Wiki

The Carcass is a typing-driven Lovecraftian roguelike colony sim, self-published on PC via Steam and set for release August 11, 2026, following a free demo and participation in Steam's Typing Fest 2026.

The Premise

You wake inside the corpse of a dead god, adrift in space. Carving a roguelike colony from procedurally generated anatomy, you negotiate with rival alien factions, evolve occult mutations, and search for one of many possible endings -- and the carcass remembers every choice you make. Story-rich, hand-written Lovecraftian events draw from deep cosmic horror lore: a stranger comes asking for shelter, an organ pulses with stolen memory, a voice in the wall offers a deal.

Every Keystroke Shapes Your Fate

The game's core hook is genuinely typing-driven -- every keystroke shapes your colony's fate, with permadeath fully real but tempered by a New Game Plus system that carries your victories and accumulated knowledge forward. Five main endings (Dominion, Symbiosis, Awakening, Escape, and Transcendence) plus four more hidden behind cryptic choices bring the total to nine confirmed possible endings, each demanding a genuinely different strategy and each rewriting how the dead god remembers you across five difficulty levels, from Merciful to Extinction.

A Real, Honest Pre-Launch Development Process

Two days before launch, the developers published a detailed "Fourteen Complaints, Fourteen Answers" update, working through every piece of community criticism the game had received and giving each one a specific fix or explanation -- including a fix for choices not visibly registering on screen, and a new permanent audit tool checking every run for duplicate event presentations.

An Honest Note on a Real, Active AI Disclosure Controversy

Worth knowing directly: the developers have officially disclosed using generative AI assistance during development -- for implementation support, Steam store capsule and header artwork, and localization across the game's 17 supported languages -- while stating clearly that the game does not generate content during actual gameplay and does not connect to any external AI service while playing. This disclosure itself has become a point of real community discussion: some players have specifically noted the disclosure was added to the Steam page and then removed again, raising further questions and citing specific technical patterns (such as formatting inconsistencies typical of AI-generated text) as reasons for continued skepticism. This remains a genuinely open, unresolved point of community discussion rather than a settled matter.
