REKA Wiki
REKA is an atmospheric third-person exploration and house-building game from small studio Emberstorm Entertainment (originally just 4-5 developers), published by Fireshine Games with Shochiku Games newly announced as co-publisher for China and Japan. It entered Early Access on September 12, 2024, and leaves it entirely on August 18, 2026 with a full 1.0 release bringing the story's emotional conclusion.
The Premise
You create your own version of Reka, an apprentice learning witchcraft under the legendary Baba Jaga, in a late-19th-century rural European setting drawing directly on Slavic folklore. Your base of operations is the genre's signature hook: a colossal, ever-growing chicken-legged cottage, drawn straight from the iconic Baba Yaga folklore image, which you build, decorate, and physically travel with across twilight forests, swamps, and villages. Along the way you forage ingredients, craft magical remedies for local villagers, take on quests, and gradually uncover a dark secret Baba Jaga has been hiding.
A Genuinely Notable Writing Credit
Partway through Early Access, Emberstorm brought on award-winning writer Rhianna Pratchett -- known for her work on Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite -- specifically to deepen REKA's lore and narrative, a direct response to strong community interest in the story. The 1.0 release delivers the story's full, emotional conclusion, including the truth behind Baba Jaga's secret.
What 1.0 Actually Adds
Beyond finishing the story, the 1.0 update brings a major house-building expansion: 5 new construction materials (birch, spruce, beech, pine, and clay), angled building placement, and a free-moving camera to make cottage customization genuinely easier. It also ships a complete UI overhaul, new Steam achievements, and brand-new Simplified Chinese and Japanese localizations tied to the newly announced Shochiku Games co-publishing deal.
An Honest Note on Reception
REKA sits at Very Positive overall (83% across 1,858+ lifetime reviews), though recent 30-day sentiment has dipped slightly to Mostly Positive (70% of 27 reviews) -- worth knowing as an honest, current snapshot rather than only citing the stronger lifetime average.
Steam Deck, Now Confirmed
REKA wasn't Steam Deck verified at its original Early Access launch, but achieved official Steam Deck playable status later during Early Access via the Ashes & Ancestors update.
