Combat Basics: How the 4v4 Tag System Works in MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls
This isn't a repeat of the Overview page -- it's a closer look at how the 4v4 tag mechanic actually plays out match to match, based on official gameplay breakdowns ahead of the August 6 launch.
Starting Small, Building Up
Every match begins with just one active fighter (your "point" character) and a single assist -- not your full four-person roster at once. As the match progresses, damage accumulation and Wall Breaks (transitions that move the fight across multiple arenas within a stage) gradually unlock the rest of your lineup, eventually opening up full 4v4 tag-based combat.
One Character to Master, Not Four
This is the single most important design decision to understand before you build a team. Director Kazuto Sekine has said explicitly that, unlike most team-based fighters that demand fluency across your entire roster, MARVEL Tokon is built so that mastering one point character is genuinely enough to compete. Your other three team members exist to support that character through assists and tag pressure, not to demand equal execution investment.
Shared Health, Shared Risk
All four characters on a team share a single life bar -- a real departure from many earlier Marvel tag fighters. This means your point character's survivability isn't just personal risk; it affects your entire squad's staying power for the whole match.
Building a Team
See the full roster and teams guide for the 5 official teams and how their members' playstyles differ -- a common approach is pairing a point character's weakness with an assist that directly covers it (for example, a zoning-focused lead paired with a close-range pressure assist for when an opponent gets past your zoning).
Format
Matches are played best-of-three, with online Casual and Ranked modes alongside offline Arcade and the full Episode Mode story campaign.
