Kill the Shadow Wiki
Kill the Shadow is a cyber-noir detective RPG from Shanghai studio Shadowlight, published by Phoenix Games and backed by Hypergryph, the studio behind the global mobile hit Arknights. It launches August 5, 2026 on PC via Steam.
A Genuine Studio Survival Story
This is a real comeback story worth knowing. A year before this launch, Kill the Shadow was pulled from Steam entirely after its previous publisher fell through, and the game's producer (known publicly as "Black") has spoken about the studio being pushed to the edge of collapse -- unpaid, without a publisher, fighting to restore its own Steam listing. Shadowlight was founded by five recent university graduates in Shanghai who first built Kill the Shadow as a student project. The game has since found a new publisher in Phoenix Games, backing from Hypergryph, and a confirmed launch date -- a genuine turnaround for a small team that nearly didn't make it.
The Premise
You play Lucas, a former detective in Dark Tide City, haunted both figuratively by his past and literally by the Shadow -- a supernatural entity attached to his back, capable of reconstructing the final moments of the dead. Rather than letting you change the past, the Shadow lets Lucas observe and reconstruct crime scenes exactly as they happened, comparing evidence and exposing contradictions in witness accounts. The story begins with the mysterious death of Teddy, Captain Theo's fiercely loyal dog -- an isolated case that unravels into a conspiracy stretching back a decade, touching the mysterious disappearance of Master Reed during a crowded temple festival and old grudges buried in the Shipwreck Wharf district.
A Genuinely Distinctive Visual Style
The game pairs 3D environments with hand-animated 2D pixel-art characters, creating what reviewers have called a "neon-noir stained glass" effect -- a technique with precedent in games like Paper Mario and Square Enix's HD-2D titles (Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy), but with its own distinctly grittier, urban-noir visual register.
RPG Choice, With Optional Violence
Kill the Shadow offers real RPG progression and player choice -- charisma-based dialogue can talk through dangerous encounters, and Strength-focused builds can resort to violence, but combat is a mechanical choice with narrative consequences rather than a core genre pillar, closer to Disco Elysium's approach while offering more genre flexibility. As the game's own tagline puts it: you can "kill, judge, or perhaps... kiss" the eventual mastermind, depending on the choices you make.
An Honest, Narrow AI Disclosure
The Steam store page includes a specific, limited AI-use disclosure: AI tools were used as an assistive layer during localization proofreading and store page asset ideation, with all final content reviewed and approved by the team -- notably narrower than a blanket disclosure, and doesn't extend to core game content generation.
Demo Reception
A free demo has been available since Steam Next Fest in October 2024, sitting at Very Positive (93% of 126 reviews). TheGamer called it "one of my favourite demos of Next Fest," a curator quote still featured on the Steam listing.
