The Compass System and Equipment in Corsair Cove

Corsair Cove has no traditional weapon loadouts -- progress instead comes through the Compass, a tech tree split into 4 creeds: Wealth, Seafaring, Empire, and Notoriety, each unlocking new buildings, production chains, and more powerful ships.

Compass points are earned by completing small tasks and milestones called Deeds, so actively pursuing side objectives (not just building) is the main way to unlock stronger equipment and ship types.

Production chains connect thematically to piracy throughout -- ale supports crew morale, spyglasses support scouting and expeditions, and cannons/flintlock pistols support both offense and defense.

Combat, exploration, and information-gathering all run on a dice-roll system rather than direct control -- the same underlying mechanic handles very different situations (pursuing a merchant ship, fleeing a pursuer), which some players find repetitive despite the variety of narrative framing around each encounter.

Defensive fortifications (gun towers, military fortresses) are worth investing in specifically for when your ships are away on expeditions -- they're your last line of defense and need a steady cannonball and black powder supply to keep functioning.
