Backpack Boy is a puzzle platformer from two-person indie team Chuck & Niles Games, self-published on PC via Steam and PlayStation, set for release August 10, 2026. It began life as a submission to the 2023 Big Mode Game Jam before being expanded into a full game with new levels and mechanics.
The Premise
Backpack Boy is off on one of his treks when he discovers a peculiar flashlight that changes the world around him -- shining its light lets him see into the past, revealing how a seemingly abandoned structure once looked and altering what's actually possible to interact with in the present. Exploring deeper into the facility uncovers the mysteries at its heart, building toward a genuine, unsettling reveal: something is waiting there.
A Mode-Swapping Puzzle Core
Rather than combat or traditional platforming challenges, the game is built entirely around this light-based mode-swapping mechanic -- using the flashlight to shift between past and present states of the environment to solve each puzzle. The game is confirmed to feature multiple endings, adding real replay incentive to a short, focused experience.
