Akatori

Akatori Wiki

Akatori is a 2.5D metroidvania and momentum-driven action platformer from Contrast Games (CEO Alex Kishchinskiy), published by Games Harbor. It launches for PC via Steam on August 5, 2026, with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions following a week later on August 12, and a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for 2027.

An Important Naming Note

If you're searching for this game, be careful not to confuse it with "Akatori: Chapter One," a separate, unrelated free title from a completely different studio (Code Wakers, published by HypeTrain Digital). That's a different product with its own separate Steam listing, not a demo or prologue for this game -- the two simply share a similar name.

The Story

You play as Mako, a young monk raised in the Firebird Temple, accompanied by a mysterious red bird sealed within her staff. Beyond the war-torn Land of the Emerald Peaks lies Kohakujō, the parent of all worlds and source of virtually infinite energy -- after millennia of tranquility, someone has seized its power, and Mako must journey through interconnected worlds and eras to stop the Amber Storms, a corrupting force infecting and distorting every living thing it touches.

The Staff: Weapon, Traversal Tool, and Key

Akatori's signature mechanic is Mako's staff, which does triple duty as a weapon, a traversal device, and a key to the world's secrets. Chain ground and aerial combos, launch the staff as a projectile and pull it back mid-motion, then glide, wall-hook, slide, and parkour through highly vertical environments -- the developers describe this momentum-driven movement style as "Kung Fu Parkour."

Living Ecosystems, Not Static Encounters

Enemy encounters unfold within genuine living ecosystems -- creatures interact with each other, trigger traps, and respond dynamically to hazards, rewarding adaptability and observation rather than memorized patterns alone.

Genuinely Unconventional Bosses

Confirmed boss encounter types go well beyond standard health-bar fights: rhythm-based battles, underwater escape sequences, and multi-phase confrontations are all explicitly promised, spread across myth-inspired locations including medieval Asian-inspired landscapes, floating bamboo islands, and surreal dimensions.
