The Relic: First Guardian Guides

How the Relic System and Combat Actually Work in The Relic: First Guardian

This isn't a repeat of the Overview page -- it's a closer, practical look at how combat and progression actually diverge from typical soulslikes, based on official materials since the July 31 launch.

Attack Freely, Defend Carefully

Since attacks carry no stamina cost while stamina is reserved purely for defense and dodging, the resource management here works differently than most soulslikes. Don't hold back offense to conserve stamina -- instead, think carefully about when you dodge or block, since that's where your actual limited resource gets spent.

Building Around Relics, Not XP

With over 70 unique passive relic effects freely swappable at any time, the progression system rewards active experimentation rather than a single locked-in build -- try recombining different passives against a specific tough Brutal rather than assuming your first successful combination is the only viable one.

Treat Every Weapon and Armor Piece as Genuinely Precious

Since every single item exists only once in the entire world, there's no farming a better roll or hoping for a duplicate -- when you find a weapon or armor piece, that's the only copy that will ever exist for your playthrough. Weigh upgrades and choices accordingly.

Reading the Brutals as Tragedy, Not Just Obstacles

Many of the game's 70-80 Brutals are confirmed to be people who starved or were cursed into their current forms -- paying attention to the story context around each fight isn't just flavor, it's confirmed as central to how the game wants you to experience its world.

Checking for Patches Before You Play

Since the developers have been open about ongoing technical issues and have released six patches since launch with more explicitly promised, make a habit of checking for updates before longer play sessions.
