Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Guides

Which Saxon Lord Should You Play First?

This isn't a repeat of the Overview page -- it's a closer, practical look at picking your first lord and mode, based on official developer guidance ahead of the August 13 launch.

Start With the Developer's Own Recommendation

Wilfred of Ivanhoe is explicitly the developers' own recommended starting lord, not just a community guess. His balanced abilities and favorable starting position genuinely make him the most forgiving choice while you're still learning core mechanics -- siege planning, negotiation, and the alliance system among them. Save Cedric of Rotherwood, Geoffrey Longsword, and Wolfric the Wild for once you understand the fundamentals.

Picking Your Mode Matters More Than Picking Your Lord

Before worrying about which lord fits your playstyle, decide which of the 3 modes you actually want: Retro Mode for pure 1986 nostalgia, Classic Mode for the same core game with modern polish, or Kingdom Mode for an entirely different roguelite structure built around dice and deck-building. Lord choice matters within Retro and Classic modes specifically; Kingdom Mode's army-composition system works differently.

Plan Around the Alliance's Collapse

Since the Saxon lords' alliance is confirmed to break the instant the first Norman castle falls, think about sequencing -- toppling that castle too early, before you're ready to defend against former allies, can leave you exposed at a vulnerable moment.

Never Skip Siege Preparation

In Classic and Retro modes specifically, remember that castles need to be properly besieged before an assault -- rushing straight into an attack without the siege phase is confirmed as a losing approach, not just a suboptimal one.
